Discover Your Future in Computer Science

Computer science is a popular option in university and studying in this program may seem pretty straightforward. After all, it's computers and science, right? Completing a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science is a great choice but completing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) could also be right for you. Or taking computer science as a minor to complement your main program of study.

While this may seem like a lot of choices, understanding them can help you find the computer science education that's perfect for you.

Wait, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science?

Yes! It's not as strange as it seems. With a BA in Computer Science, you'll take computer science courses along with arts courses that help you build communication and critical thinking skills. This can help if you want to explore computer software and coding careers in less science-y industries like education, media production, research, journalism, and more.

Is a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science a better option?

A BSc degree isn't necessarily better, but it will be different than a BA. There are several things to consider when choosing between a BSc and a BA in computer science, like program entry requirements, available courses and learning opportunities, options for co-op, and your career goals. But whether you choose a BSc or BA, you will still get a solid foundation in computer science.

Can I really study computer science and something else?

As you explore your options for computer science programs, check to see if there are options to expand your learning beyond computer science. At Laurier, for example, you can take Business Administration and Computer Science (a double degree program), in addition to our BA and BSc Computer Science programs. Understanding all your choices will help you find the program that's perfect for you and your goals.

Is my only career option to work for a software company?

A computer science degree can lead to a career at a software company, like a software engineer or database administrator. Computer science skills and knowledge are also applicable across a variety of fields and industries, from health care and finance to supply chain management and manufacturing. Some of the careers you could find in these industries include business systems analyst, informatics specialist, chief information officer, web designer, systems engineer — and so many more!

Studying computer science in university can be a great choice that leads to a successful and rewarding career.
